Walnuts Protect Against Alzheimer’s Disease

A new snack may reduce the risk of developing, or even prevent, Alzheimer’s disease, according to new research. A new study conducted on mice found significant improvement in learning skills, memory, reducing anxiety, and motor development when they were fed a diet rich in walnuts. Led by Dr. Abha Chauhan at the New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities, these findings could lay groundwork for future studies on humans.

“The research group examined the effects of dietary supplementation on mice with 6 percent or 9 percent walnuts, which are equivalent to 1 ounce and 1.5 ounces per day, respectively, of walnuts in humans,” Chauhan told The Huffington Post. The researchers believe the high antioxidant content of walnuts may protect the brain from the degeneration seen in Alzheimer’s disease.
